What We Actually Buy
The honest version of buying is that we are looking for three things and none of them are excitement. First, a pattern that behaves: a sleeve that stays where you put it, a collar that lies flat after a season. Second, a mill or a factory we can name. Third, a price that still makes sense when you divide it by the number of times the piece will be worn. Excitement is what the customer brings; it is not a qualification. The four reasons a designer leaves the rail are more interesting: a size run that stops at twelve, fabric that pills on the display sample, a lookbook that promises a fit the garment does not deliver, and a wholesale lead time that makes us sell a coat in April for a shop that needs it in September.
