The London Layer
London winters are not cold so much as damp and grey, which changes what "layering" means. You are not building for minus twenty; you are building for a room that is too warm, a street that is too wet, and a six o'clock dinner where the coat has to come off. The order that survives all three is the same one we wear on the shop floor: a fine merino first, a silk blazer second, and a double-faced wool coat over both. Merino because it regulates, silk because it slips rather than bunches under a jacket, and double-faced wool because it has no lining to hold water. Everything else — the trousers, the shoe — can be wrong and the outfit still reads as intended.
